Lusaka Deputy Mayor has launched the Safe Market Project in order to formulate Covid-19 compliant Market models.

Speaking during a Media briefing, Christopher Shakafuswa said the main objective of the project which has been piloted in Chilenje, Lilanda and Nyumba yanga Market is to identify relevant, feasible and sustainable Covid-19 compliant models that will positively impact on community behavior to prevent spread of the pandemic in the trading places.

Mr. Shakafuswa explained the influx of people into markets creates congestion making it difficult for people to observe physical distancing and cough etiquette hence the need to control the spread of covid-19 in markets around the city.

“In order to ensure that these Health Guidelines are followed accordingly, the enforcement and monitoring activities will be undertaken by the Lusaka City Council Public Health Inspectors,” he said.

Mr. Shakafuswa further disclosed that the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and other stakeholders have handed over various equipment necessary for the project which include, motorized sprayers for fumigation, infra-red thermometers, posters on Covid -19 safety and face masks.

He said the Safe Market Project has been initiated by Lusaka City Council in collaboration with Ministry of Health with support from UNDP.
