ActionAid supports KCM takeover.

ActionAid Zambia says disengaging KCM is a welcome move if only done in a proper manner that ensures sustainability and respects for human rights in the operations of the Mine.
In a statement issued to money FM News Action ActionAid Zambia Country Representative Nalucha Ziba says for many years KCM have always claimed to have operational challenges and threatened to either suspend operations or cut down on the workforce whenever new tax laws are introduced.
Ms Ziba says the arm-twisting game is not appropriate in promoting a win – win situation between the country and the investor.
She has since recommended that government should appoint a credible key expert to manage the transition period of KCM.
“It is important that experts from key institutions are engaged in a transparent manner to manage the transition period.” She said.
MSs Ziba says the experts should not be individuals or proxies to individuals with private interests in KCM.
These experts should work independently outside any political influence and within the agreed scope of work by both parties
The country director has also observed the need for government to thoroughly evaluate KCM assets and liabilities:
She says the minister of mines was a few days ago on record urging KCM Workers and all Zambians to be vigilant and protect KCM Assets following reports purporting that the Mining company has been involved in the selling of some scrap and equipment.
She adds that whether there is merit in these claims or not, government should to undertake a thorough audit of the company’s assets and liabilities and make public the audit findings. Thereafter, engage all key stakeholders on the best way possible to manage the assets and liabilities.
