BoZ to honor KK with commemorative banknote, coin

• BoZ is in the process of considering issuing a special commemorative banknote and coin in honor of Dr. Kenneth Kaunda.
• BoZ cannot guarantee introduction of the proposed banknote and coin on 28th April 2022.
• The printing and minting of banknotes and coins involve third parties.

Bank of Zambia (BoZ) says it is in the process of considering issuing a special commemorative banknote and coin in Honour of the country’s founding father Dr. Kenneth Kaunda.
Responding to Money FM’s Press Query, Bank Assistant Director-Communications, Besnat Mwanza however stated that the Bank cannot guarantee the introduction of the proposed banknote and coin on 28th April 2022, as suggested by some Zambians.
“The printing and minting of banknotes and coins involve third parties. You may wish to note that this requires strict adherence to procurement and security processes,” Ms. Mwanza explained.
This follows calls by Zambians for the Central Bank to consider re-introducing late Dr. Kaunda’s portrait on banknotes and coins as a way of honoring his legacy, suggesting that the new notes should be unveiled on 28th April, next year.
Zambia’s Founding Father Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, who was born on 28th April 1924, died on 17th June, 2021 and was put to rest on 7th July, 2021 at the Presidential Burial site in Lusaka.
And President Edgar Lungu has declared April 28, the birth date of Dr. Kaunda, a public holiday in his honor.
