BSLT calls for creation of disability empowerment fund

• President Elect must create disability empowerment fund.
• Incoming government should form a ministry for people living with disabilities.
• It should allocate 10% of all employment opportunities to qualified differently abled persons.

Born Short Living Tall (BSLT) has called on President Elect Hakainde Hichilema to consider creating a disability empowerment fund alongside all privileges that the youth will receive from his government.
Speaking to Money FM News, Organization Executive Director Ntalasha Chisha also suggested that 10% of all employment opportunities on the labor market must be allocated to qualified differently abled persons in the country.
Mr. Chisha stated that the new government must also consider establishing a ministry for people living with disabilities to help effectively address challenges differently abled citizens face.
“Awarding of government contracts must give preferential treatment to the youths, women and especially people living with disabilities. The President elect should appoint a differently abled person to be part of their parties’ highest decision making organ the National Management committee which we believe will inspire opposition political parties to follow suit,” Mr. Chisha said.
He expressed confidence that the new government administration will prioritize the plight of people living with disabilities with equal and full inclusion in the country’s governance system of the nation.
“In new and emerging democracies, minority groups are not relegated as back benches but are encouraged to take the lead, they are included in formal political systems and decision making processes as critical players. We will be delivering a paper of our proposal to the president elect for consideration,” he added.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ntalasha noted that Mr. Hichilema’s Speech delivered on Monday this week inspired hope and gave assurances to differently abled persons that they will be fully integrated in the spectrum of Governance in the new administration.
He said the organization believes that until the issues that affect people living with disabilities are represented by the affected people, their needs and concerns will not be prioritized.
“The participation in political and public life for person with disabilities enables them to have a voice in decisions that affect them. Article 29 on the rights with people living with disabilities states that government should encourage people with disabilities to get involved and be incorporated in the governance system of the nation. This is because People living with disabilities do not enjoy the same access to society on an equal basis with others. There economic, social, education opportunities are experienced with enormous challenges and limitations,” he noted.
