Bus and Taxi Owners Association of Zambia (BTOAZ) has called on all law enforcement officers to immediately institute investigations into reports of attacks on passengers allegedly being perpetrated by bus drivers and their conductors in Lusaka.
Association National Spokesperson Amis Daudi told Money FM News that this is to ensure that perpetrators of the uncalled for act are apprehended and made to face the wrath of the law.
Mr. Daudi stated that the Association is concerned about the reported criminal activities and attacks on members of the public whilst on-board of public passenger buses in Lusaka.
He urged all travellers and commuters to desist from the use of undesignated bus stops or stations and totally avoid boarding unregistered buses and taxis.
“We would like to inform and urge the public, at all times, to use registered buses and taxis which are well regulated. Registered operators are clearly marked with fleet names or numbers, they bear specific coloured ribbons for regional identity and their vehicle registration number plates are red in colour. Additionally, these units are under mandatory insurance cover for all passengers,” Mr. Daudi said.
He further called on the law enforcement officers to also step-in to ensure that no unregistered vehicles are allowed to operate in the passenger transport sector as this is the only way to collectively protect and ensure the safety of the travelling public.
“The Association has strongly condemned these activities and would like to call upon all law enforcement officers to immediately and speedily institute investigations so that the perpetrators of this crime are apprehended and made to face the wrath of the law,” he stated.
Mr. Daudi assured the general public that legitimate public passenger transport operators are registered with the Government through the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) and they are traceable in the event of any improper conduct of the crew.
“The BTOAZ remains committed to the promotion and delivery of a safer, convenient and efficient public passenger transport service,” Mr. Daudi added.
Police in Lusaka are currently investigating reports about passengers getting attacked and raped on public transport in Lusaka by bus drivers and their conductors.
