The Cleaners Association of Zambia says it is in talks with Lumwana Mine to ensure that the cleaning contract that was offered to a South African cleaning company is given to local cleaning companies.
The association has also appealed to Government to sign the Statutory Instrument to make cleaning contracts a preserve of local companies.
Association General Secretary Lawrence Makumbi tells Money FM News that the association has also managed to get cleaning contracts for Shopright across the country saying all shopping malls should also support the local companies.
Mr. Makumbi says even the mines should as well support local companies by giving them business in the cleaning sector.
“We are happy that this has been a successful year as we have made good deals for the local companies. But our call is for President Edgar Lungu to sign the SI that will make the cleaning contracts a preserve of Zambians,” he said.
He says President Lungu should give the cleaning companies a New Year gift in the form of the SI that was drafted in partnership with the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry.
“The government has set 2021 as a target to create one million jobs, the cleaning sector has potential to help in the creation of those jobs. So far we have over 18, 000 jobs in the sector and if we have the SI we can create over 25, 000 by 2021,” said Mr. Makumbi.
