Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Business Council (CBC) has urged Small and Medium Enterprises to have knowledge of their products’ Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System (HS Codes).
CBC Business Development Manager Hopewell Musundire told Money FM News in an interview that the HS Codes as it is what SME’s will use in most of their trade data base.
Mr. Musundire explained knowing HS Codes is something that SME’s will need to have basic knowledge of, although the job is normally done by freight forwarders.
“It is also important to have knowledge of what you are producing so that you avoid challenges of writing wrong HS codes for the product that you are producing,” He said.
Mr. Musundire explained that entering wrong HS Codes for one’s products has ripple effects to attract punishment from the Revenue Authority, something that would be classified as trying to cheat the system.
“So we encourage Small and Medium Enterprises to do research or to try and find the class of their products with its HS Code.” Added Mr. Musundire.
Mr. Musundire noted HS codes helps SME’s in most trade data bases to have an idea of where the products is being imported in the region or world so that they are also guided on opportunities that exist.
