The Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission (CEEC) says it will this month start disbursing the US$27 million Aquaculture Seed Fund in partnership with the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.
Speaking at the Aquaculture Sector Discussion Forum in Siavonga under the theme” Mitigating Disease Risk in the Aquaculture Sector”, CEEC Direct General Likando Mukumbuta says the Commission has so far selected 18 applicants out of the 363 that applied for special incentive grants, under the Aquaculture Seed Fund Project.
Mr. Mukumbuta says the 18 successful applicants will benefit from the K35 million grant aimed at empowering small scale entrepreneurs in fingering production at nursery and hatchery level in an effort to address the shortage of fingerings in the aquaculture sector.
He says the aquaculture sector has largely suffered from the shortage of good quality fingerings due to the non-participation of small scale entrepreneurs in value chain.
Mr. Mukumbuta says the project will be implemented in 34 districts of the country.
He says the project will positively contribute to fish production in Zambia.
He further says the project is being financed by the Africa Development Bank (AfDB).
