Economic and Financial Crimes Court in Kitwe has prosecuted Changesheng Mining Equipment Company Limited and its Director on 24 counts of false returns and tax evasion.
Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) Corporate Communications Manager Oliver Nzala revealed that facts of the case are that Changesheng Mining Equipment Company Limited and its director Wang Qi aged 33, on dates unknown but between 1st May 2021 and 31st August 2022 in Kitwe, jointly and whilst acting together broke the law by evading tax.
Mr. Nzala said the company provided documents namely Tax Invoices to Zambia Revenue Authority claiming to show that Changesheng Mining Equipment Company Limited had purchased taxable goods from other companies on the Copperbelt which was false, thereby defrauding Government of over K 2 million.
He added that the Company and its Director evaded paying Value Added Tax and interest by providing false returns that taxable purchases were made from local Copperbelt Companies when in fact not.
“The actions of Changesheng Mining Equipment Company Limited and Wang Qi its Director caused loss of revenue to the Government of the Republic of Zambia in taxes amounting to K2, 513, 234, 47. The case has been adjourned to 3rd April 2023 for commencement of defence by the accused persons,” he said.
Mr. Nzala further noted that through intensified tax audits, the Authority has observed an increase in tax evasion cases by taxpayers.
“The Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) will continue prosecuting all those involved in tax evasion and smuggling activities,” he added.
