Chikankata District may have a poor crop yield this year.

A traditional Leader in Chikankata District of Southern Province says his area is likely to record a poor crop harvest due to poor rains being recorded in the area.

Headman Chaalwa says the area which was hit by severe hunger in the 2018/2019 farming season may go through a similar difficult time.
“I don’t know how my subjects will survive this year because hunger in this area is real as you can see from the drying crops,” he said.

He has appealed to government to consider sending relief food to his subjects as most maize fields in the area were drying due to inadequate rains.
“My appeal to government is for them to consider sending us relief food on time because the food we have is not enough and my subjects are starving, “Headman Chaalwa stated.

He was speaking when Chikankata Member of Parliament Kabwe Mwiinga distributed bags of Mealie-Meal to the aged in the area to mark New Year celebrations.
Recently, the Zambia Meteorological Department announced that Zambia is likely to receive Normal to Above Normal rainfall during the 2019/2020 rainfall season.

The station warned that there will be a likelihood of dry spells around February especially over the Southern half of the country.
