Chisamba Council seizes over 1,000 assorted food items

• The seizure was done through routine inspections of business houses.
• This is to ascertain compliance levels to the Public Health Act CAP 295, Liquor Licensing Act No. 20 of 2011.
• The inspection was targeting food items sold in bars, shops and restaurants.

Chisamba Town Council says it has seized 1, 998 food items such as beef, fish, and milk products from bars, butcheries, shops and restaurants in the district for expiration, defectives, lack of expiry and manufacturing dates.
Council Public Relations Officer Nakubiana Shabongo revealed in a statement that other items seized include body lotion, liquor, deodorants, washing pastes and disinfectants among others, adding that the seizure of items was done through the local authority’s its routine inspections of business houses around the district.
Ms. Shabongo said this is to ascertain compliance levels to the Public Health Act CAP 295, Liquor Licensing Act No. 20 of 2011 and Food Safety Act No.7 of 2019 and the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission Act of 2010.
She explained that the inspection was targeting food items sold in bars, shops and restaurants.
“This is according to a report submitted by Chisamba Town Council Senior Health Inspector, Shinga Maramwidze to the Health, Education, Community Development and Social Services Committee in Chisamba.”
“The Chisamba Council is concerned that businesses have continued abrogating the named Acts even after being sensitized by the local authority,” Ms. Shabongo
She appealed to the business community in the District to adhere to laws, guidelines and regulations that are relevant to their businesses as failure will result into legal punishment and fines, warning that the Chisamba Council will not take lightly violations of the stated pieces of legislation.
