Chitambo Town Council says it has for the third consecutive year cultivated rice with the aim to broaden revenue generation base.
Speaking at the flagging off of the 50 hectare rice farm, Council Chairperson Brian Mwelwa said farming is one of the most important components that the local authority can use to generate revenue in Chitambo and across the country.
Mr. Mwelwa encouraged Council workers in the district to work hard and protect the harvest which will help in the smooth running of the local authority after selling the proceeds.
He further stressed the need to have the rice polished and packaged within Chitambo District.
“We thought we can’t only depend on fishing and other ventures, farming is one of the most important things in our country where we can produce and earn much as a Council that is why we introduced farming.”
“We are here today to flag off the 2021/2022 harvest season for Chitambo Town Council Rice Farm. We want this year’s farming season to be number one for Chitambo Town Council so I am encouraging everyone to work hard, Mr. Mwelwa said.
And speaking at the same event, Council Treasurer Mable Kamanga said Chitambo depends much on grants from Local Government Equalization Fund which is not enough for its operations.
Ms. Kamanga noted that the local authority has low revenue generation sources, prompting it to venture into rice farming.
“Aside the from the 50 hectare rice farm, the local authority is running a lodge and Block Making ventures for revenue generation,” she stated.
