Copperbelt Permanent Secretary says construction of the Copperbelt International Airport has reached 99.9 percent completion level.
Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, Bright Nundwe disclosed that the Airport which is sitting on 2, 000 hectares of land is ready for commissioning.
Mr. Nundwe however said government is waiting for an expatriate to test the facility before it can be commissioned as the person could not travel due to the Covid-19 restrictions.
“The Copperbelt International Airport is at 99.9 percent in terms of completion, what we are waiting for now is simply someone to do the calibration, which is the testing of the flight on the same. That Airport is sitting on 2, 000 hectares of land and we have done 99.9 percent job. When that facility is commissioned, it will employ over a 1, 000 people.”
“It is ready for commissioning we are just waiting for a person to do the calibration. Calibration is the first thing, you need to test an international airport but because of Covid that person could not travel,” Mr. Nundwe said.
He stated that the facility is expected to be commissioned within the month of July, 2021.
“That Airport is a marvel to the nation, that Airport is a masterpiece to the nation, it has added beauty to the Copperbelt, it has changed the landscape of the Copperbelt and particularly Ndola. We are very appreciative to the President of the Republic of Zambia for giving us such a masterpiece of infrastructure. We want that Airport to be commissioned within July,” he added.
The Construction of the $400 million Copperbelt International Airport to commenced in 2017.
The project will include developing standard aviation facilities, and it will service a number of routes including South Africa, Kenya, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Tanzania as well as service domestic routes such as Lusaka, Solwezi and other destinations for chartered flights.
