• The structures were fabricated and placed outside Central Park without planning permission.
• They are believed to have been placed at night.
• People will not be allowed to continue erecting illegal structures in the CBD with impunity.
A combined team of Lusaka City Council (LCC) Police and Zambia Police has removed illegal makeshift structures which were mushrooming outside Central Park.
Council Public Relations George Sichimba disclosed to Money FM News that the fabricated structures were placed outside Central Park opposite the Main Post Office by unknown people without planning permission from the local authority.
Mr. Sichimba explained that the illegal makeshift structures are believed to have been placed at night, adding that owners have not yet been found.
He stated that people with such motives risk losing their resources as the Council will not hesitate to demolish all illegal structures mushrooming in areas which have not been designated for trading.
“Lusaka City Council Police in conjunction with Zambia Police today swung into action and removed illegal makeshift structures which were mushrooming outside Central Park. The illegal structures are believed to have been placed at night but members of the public who saw them in the morning reported the matter to Council.”
“The Council swiftly moved in to remove the structures before other people with similar ill intentions could do the same. The local authority is not going to allow people to continue placing/erecting illegal structures in the central business district (CBD) with impunity,” Mr. Sichimba said.
Mr. Sichimba warned that those who repeatedly abrogate the law risk being prosecuted in the Fast Track Court.
He advised all residents to follow the laid down procedure of acquiring trading space or for erecting any structure.
“People that want to acquire trading space should follow the right procedure by coming to the Lusaka City Council. People that want trading spaces or they want to erect structures, the authority is Lusaka City Council,” he added.
