CSO-SUN calls for increased milk consumption in Zambia

• One of the things that limit access to Milk products is the issue of cost.
• The recommended amount of milk an individual needs to consume annually is about 200 liters.
• Government must create an enabling environment to have more producers of milk in the country.

Civil Society Scaling Up Nutrition (CSO-SUN) Alliance has advised government to create an enabling environment for the country to have more milk producers to help reduce prices of the commodity.
Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, Organization Country Coordinator Mathews Mhuru noted that one of the factors limiting access to Milk and other dairy products is the high cost of the commodities.
Mr. Mhuru observed that last year, 1 liter of Milk was trading around K10 but that now the price has gone up to somewhere close to K27 for the same 1 liter container, making it impossible to improve milk consumption in the country.
“One of the things that limit access to Milk products as well as other dairy products is the issue of cost. It is quite worrying that last year around this time 1 liter of Milk was fetching something close to a K10 but now milk has gone up to somewhere close to K27 for the same 1 liter container so this makes it impossible to jut improve milk consumption in the country,” Mr. Mhuru noted.
He said the recommended amount of milk an individual needs to consume annually is about 200 liters, but that even before the prices were affected, an ordinary Zambian was consuming about 24 liters which is below the recommended quantity.
Mr. Mhuru stated that if more milk producers come on board, there will be more supply in the country, which may culminate into reduced prices and encourage high consumption.
“The recommended amount of milk that an individual should consume on an annual basis is about 200 liters but already before the prices were affected, an ordinary Zambian was consuming about 24 liters of milk which is below a quarter of what an individual should consume but now with the prices that have gone very high, the likelihood of reduced consumption by a Zambian has also become very high.”
“So for us the call is to government to really create an enabling environment to have more producers of milk in the country so that there is enough supply, then the likelihood of the prices going down becomes very high,” he stated.
