CSO-SUN urges Government to make nutritious food affordable

• She indicated that good nutrition is the pre-requisite to human development.
• It is necessary to make sure that nutritious food is made available and cheaper for everybody to afford.

Civil Society Scaling Up Nutrition (CSO-SUN) Alliance says it expects government to implement the agenda to make nutritious food accessible and cheaper at all cost.
Speaking to Money FM News, Organization Country Coordinator Mathews Mhuru however hailed the new administration for re-affirming Zambia’s commitment to ending all forms of malnutrition at the ongoing Nutrition for Growth Summit in Japan.
Mr. Mhuru noted that at the summit, Vice President Mutale Nalumango indicated the need for countries including Zambia to increase investment not only to nutrition but to food security as well.
“She indicated that good nutrition is the pre-requisite to human development and mentioned three key commitments that Zambia is making to ending all forms of malnutrition namely (1) implement the Food and Nutrition Act 2020, (2) reducing under-nutrition in line with World Health Assembly targets by 2025 and (3) accelerating scaling up nutrition specific and nutrition sensitive programs,” Mr. Mhuru said.
He said the commitment is timely as government is planning to remove subsidies on electricity and fuel which will have a direct impact on food prices.
“It is our hope that the government’s agenda to make nutritious food accessible and cheaper is realized at all cost,” he added.
The Nutrition for Growth Summit is a global effort to bring together country governments, donors, businesses, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and beyond.
The Summit is being hosted by the Government of Japan and represents a critical milestone to addressing malnutrition in all forms around the world.
