DEC nabs two Malawians, Nigerian for trafficking in 1.1 kg of heroin

• The suspects have been jointly charged and arrested for trafficking in 100 pellets of heroin with a total weight of 1.1kg.
• The drugs were concealed in a bag for Deborah Mkandawire who was about to travel to Bangladesh through several connections.
• DEC has seized the 1.1 kilograms of heroin.

Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) says it has jointly charged and arrested and charged two Malawian Nationals and a Nigerian, for trafficking in 100 pellets of heroin, weighing 1.1 kilograms.
Commission Public Relations Officer Mathias Kamanga, identified the suspects as Deborah Mkandawire, 29 and Vanessa Mwaipaya, 33, both Malawians as well as Declan Chinonye Ozuluoha, a Nigerian male aged 42.
Mr. Kamanga revealed to Money FM News in a statement that the drugs were concealed in a bag belonging to Deborah who was about to travel to Bangladesh through several connections.
He said the Commission has since seized the 1.1 kilograms of heroin from the suspects at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport.
“The Commission has heightened its operations in entry and exit points to ensure that Zambia is not being used as a transit point for drug traffickers, hence, the many arrests that have been recorded in the recent past involving narcotics,” Mr. Kamanga said.
Meanwhile, Mr. Kamanga disclosed that the Commission has arrested 28 year old Dickson Katatula, of Matero Compound for trafficking in 156 sachets of heroin, and Charles Phiri, 19 of the same area for trafficking in 204.1 grams of loose cannabis and 893 grams of cannabis seeds.
“Meanwhile, the Commission on the Copperbelt has jointly charged and arrested Chansa Josphat, a male aged 26 of 547 Ganerton Compound in Kitwe, Christopher Katongo, a male aged 19 of 1718 Kwacha Compound in Kitwe, Chansa Mwansa, a male aged 32 of 1718 Kwacha Compound in Kitwe and Amos Chilufya, a male aged 19 of 547 Ganerton Compound in Kitwe for trafficking in 118kgs of loose cannabis,” he disclosed.
He said the suspects are expected to appear in court within the course of this week.
