Expert urges farmers to grow irrigated crops

• Irrigated crops give a higher percentage return to the investment.
• In the short term they will make a lot of money.
• Let the farmers go into enterprises that are low costing but will give them money.

An Agriculture Expert has advised small scale farmers in the country to consider growing irrigated crops which have proved to give a higher percentage return.
Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, Dr. Frank Kayula said farmers should consider growing vegetables that are prevailing at the moment such as tomato as it is a very good crop although prices are slightly going down because of the adequate supply of the commodity on the market.
“Irrigated crops give a higher percentage return to the investment that is put in as well as small livestock. So our recommendation is chicken, sheep if you can, fish farming, vegetable growing, under vegetable you can look at things that are prevailing now, such as tomato whose prices are slightly going down because there is too much tomato right now on the market but it’s a very good crop as well, Eggplant as wells as Okra these are very good crops,” Dr. Kayula said.
Dr. Kayula stated that farmers must also venture into small livestock business such as chicken, sheep if they can manage as well as fish farming and be able to make a lot of money in the short term.
He said farmers must go into enterprises that are low costing but will give them good profits.
“In the short term they will make a lot of money. However, if they just go for huge Livestock like cattle, if you invest in it, it will give you money in the future when the herd grows. But milking animals can give you money almost immediately and it also charms out a lot of money, the turn over there is good,” he noted.
