The Non-Governmental Organizations Coordinating Council (NGOCC) has urged government to step up efforts and ensure that women police officers take up decision making positions in the public service.
Speaking to journalists in the sidelines on gender training programs for female police officers on the Copperbelt held at Kitwe’s plot 35, NGOCC Programs Manager Chilufya Siwale said social norms and myths have continued to slow down efforts aimed at ensuring gender mainstreaming in the country.
Ms. Siwale said women have the capacity to deliver especially in positions that the where once dominated by males as seen by the existing women in the Zambia Police service who have exceeded exceptionally well.
Ms. Siwale disclosed that over 100 female police officers has so far benefited with leadership skills in training Programmes that where conducted in the four provinces from the time they partnered with Zambia Police in 2017.
And Zambia Police National Coordinator Lloyd Mushauko said the service has made progress in ensuring that gender mainstreaming is achieved through the appointing of female officers in decision making positions.
Mr. Mushauko said a number of interventions have been put in place to ensure more women are recruited in the service.
He disclosed that 61 percent of women have been recruited as constables in all training institutions across the country as government considers women to be partners in development.
