Mwanangwa Rice Company, based in Muchinga Province, has commended the government for responding positively to an appeal to pay farmers who supplied crops to the Food Reserve Agency.
Mwanangwa Rice Company Managing Director Yotam Mtayachalo is also appealing to the government that it should this year plan adequately for the 2019/2020 farming season so that they do not have a repeat of what happened last year.
Mr. Mtayachalo says the government should this year ensure that farmers are paid promptly and distribution of farming inputs is done before the start of the rain season.
He says this will help farmers to plan adequately for the next farming season because many areas in Chama district are inaccessible during this time of the year.
“We are also worried that many people may face starvation in the district because of food shortages arising from poor rain pattern, floods and destruction of crops by wild animals in some areas hence many farmers experienced poor crop yields last year. Furthermore the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) should also put in place logistical measures and see to it that relief food is distributed in advance to safe food storage facilities in far flung areas because certain places such as Sikalinga, Mulilo, Chikwa and Chifunda just to mention a few are extremely very difficult to reach by road during the rainy season,” he said.
