Governance Expert calls for redesigning of big cities

• Most of the buildings in big cities have seen better days.
• There is need for the new administration to consider redesigning cities.
• Shop owners should take full responsibilities to ensure their business premises are well maintained.

A Governance Expert has called on government to consider redesigning big cities such as Lusaka, Ndola and Kitwe and redo the drainage system to mitigate effects of climate change.
Speaking to Money FM News, Wesley Miyanda noted that most buildings in the big cities have seen better days and there is need for relevant authorities to enforce the law that should compel the owners to give new facelifts to their dilapidated structures.
Mr. Miyanda observed that most shops in the central business districts of the big cities are completely in a deplorable state, therefore owners should take full responsibilities to ensure that their business premises are well maintained.
“Most of the buildings in our big cities such as Lusaka, Ndola and Kitwe have seen better days and there is need for relevant authorities to enforce the law that should compel the owners to give new facelifts to their dilapidated structures. Most of the buildings were built at the time when Zambia’s population was small.”
“Now that we are more than 18,000,000 in number, there is also need for the new administration to consider redesigning our cities, redo the drainage system to mitigate effects of climate change and many other challenges faced by our people,” Mr. Miyanda said.
He also challenged local Engineers to work on new designs of the cities and fix the issue of floods that the country has been over the years.
“It’s unfortunate that in the middle of Lusaka, we still have unfinished buildings such as Mususu Kalenga along Freedom way, posing a danger to human lives and contributing to the ugliness of the City.”
“Shop owners should take full responsibilities to ensure that their business premises are well maintained and painted so as to make our towns look modern. It’s high time our Local Engineers got down to work on new designs of our cities and fix the issue of floods that we are experiencing year in year out,” he added.
