Governance Expert toasts Government’s one year in office

• New Dawn Administration has managed to rewrite the economic history of Zambia.
• Government has actualized the free education from Primary to Secondary School.
• It has recruited over 40, 000 civil servants in the education and health sectors.

A Governance Expert says the new administration has made notable strides in turning around the country’s economy within a space of one year in office.
Wesley Miyanda told Money FM News that government has actualized the free education from Primary to Secondary School, recruitment of over 40, 000 civil servants in the education and health sectors, and increase in Constituency Development Funds (CDF) from K1.6million to K25.7million.
Mr. Miyanda also noted that there have been concerted efforts in the fight against corruption and presidential interactions with other international communities both within and outside the African continent for possible foreign investments to create jobs and business opportunities for Zambians.
“The UPND Alliance New Dawn Administration has managed to rewrite the economic history of Zambia by carrying into effect a good number of its campaign promises.”
“Within a space of one year in power, Zambians have seen more than 40,000 civil servants being recruited in the education and health sectors, increment of Constituency Development Funds from K1.6million to K25.7million and decentralization of the same, actualization of free education from Primary to Secondary School, Youth and Women Empowerment at all levels of society,” Mr. Miyanda noted.
He however said government still needs to do more with regards to procurement of more drugs in all health facilities and also broadening Youth and women empowerment program from CDF which is still narrow.
“Much as we wish to sing songs of praise for the UPND government for underscoring these tremendous achievements in the few months of being in office, we shouldn’t hesitate to point out certain areas of importance which still need some attention.”
“We need more drugs in all our health facilities and enough health personnel to attend to patients. We still have a lot of vulnerable and old aged people not benefiting from Social Cash Transfer Program. The program of Youth and women empowerment from CDF is still narrow and selective since only few people are benefiting due to unnecessary bottlenecks and is non-men inclusive,” he stated.
And Mr. Miyanda said government has a very huge task to ensure that all retirees are paid their money because there are some who were retrenched in 1991 and a good number of them have passed on without getting their benefits.
“In addition, the new Dawn Administration has embarked on dismantling stupendous workload of paying out retirees which has been inherited from previous governments. It should be noted here that the issue of retirees is quite critical because there are some who were retrenched in 1991, especially those that worked for State owned organisations such as Zambia State Insurance Corporation, Zambia Railways, just to mention but a few, and have gone through all these previous administrations without getting their retirement packages.”
“Unfortunately a good number of these people have passed on. So the UPND government has a very huge task to make sure all these retirees are paid their money,” he added.
