Chama North Member of Parliament says government has responded positively towards averting the hunger situation in the constituency.
Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, Yotam Mtayachalo said people have now started accessing relief food, while Food Reserve Agency (FRA) has also opened community maize sales.
Mr. Mtayachalo stated that the affected people still need a lot of support from government because there is still a long way to go before farmers can harvest their crops for hunger to be completely mitigated.
“At least after making an appeal, the government has responded positively and so far our people have started accessing receiving relief food and Food Reserve Agency has also opened community maize sales. So at least that is being mitigated but we still need a lot of support from government because we still have a long way to go before farmers can harvest their crops so that is our appeal,” Mr. Mtayachalo said.
He commended President Hakainde Hichilema for moving in swiftly after the rational leader in the area also added his voice over the hunger situation in the district.
“So I just want to commend the President for moving in swiftly after our senior chief also added his voice over the hunger situation in the district and President Hakainde has acted swiftly to avert the starvation. So for us I think we are happy and the government should continue to come to the aid of the people of Chama, because am sure by end of next month our people will be able to have access to the new harvest,” he added.
Recently, Mr. Mtayachalo had appealed to government to avert the looming hunger situation in the constituency which was being exacerbated by the high cost of mealie meal.
He lamented that the staple food was fetching at K200 and more for a 25kg bag of breakfast, while a tin of 20kg maize is costing over K100.
Mr. Mtayachalo called on government to urgently allocate more relief food to Chama district to avert looming hunger, adding that the district needs an allocation of 18, 000 x 50kg bags of maize which can be distributed as relief food.
