Government has challenged Anti -Corruption Commission (ACC) to heighten the fight against corruption to avoid losing resources through the scourge.
Speaking during the official opening of Middle Management Training of Anti-Corruption Commission staff by Commonwealth Secretariat, Deputy Secretary to Cabinet Dr. Oliver Kalabo said the country is losing a lot of money through corruption, a situation which must be stopped.
Dr. Kalabo stated chasing after properties belonging to those perceived to be involved in Corruption by the Commission could have been avoided if preventive measures were taken in the first place.
He has since thanked the Commonwealth Secretariat for funding the ACC staff management training.
“This management training is a significant step in the right direction. The government is hopeful that the training will increase the productivity of the commission by way of enhancing the quality of its performance and the prevention of inefficiencies of time, money and other resources, “he stated.
And speaking at the same event, Commonwealth Head of Public Sector Governance Dr. Roger Koranteng said ACC has been faced with a number of challenges and key among them is lack of funds to conduct awareness programs, hence the need for Government to continue providing adequate resources for such programmes.
Meanwhile, Commission Acting Director General Silumesi Muchula stated that the training of 56 ACC senior staff members with skills in managing Anti -Corruption Agencies for corruption control will strengthen the capacity of the institution to promote efficiency, transparency and accountability in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
“As you are aware SDG no. 16 seeks to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels. Therefore, the commission has a critical role to play in order for Zambia to achieve this goal. Thus, this training is very important and it has come at a right time,” he said.
