Government releases K19.8 million salary arrears for TAZARA workers

• Government release an additional K19.8 million to enable TAZARA dismantle part of the salary arrears.
• The funds will carter for payroll related salary payments.
• Government last funded K18 million towards salary arrears in April 2022.

Ministry of Finance and National Planning has released an additional K19.8 million to enable Tanzania Zambia Railways Authority (TAZARA) dismantle part of the salary arrears.
Minister of Transport and Logistics Frank Tayali said the funds will carter for payroll related salary payments.
Mr. Tayali stated that Government last funded K18 million towards salary arrears in April 2022.
He further revealed that Government and TAZARA management have already commenced works on the Chambishi Bridge which is expected to be operational by the end of July 2022.
“Government is committed to continue addressing the challenges of TAZARA until the business is made sustainable, “he said.
Recently, Employees of the Tanzania Zambia Railway Authority -TAZARA- on the Zambian side praised government for releasing funds to dismantle their three months’ salary arrears and repair the collapsed Chambeshi Railway Bridge.
Crews and Allied Workers Union of TAZARA (CRAWUZ) President, Bevis Silumbe said the move will boost morale in the workers and help in the resumption of train movements between Nakonde and New Kapiri Mposhi.
He appealed to government to find a permanent solution to operational challenges facing TAZARA in order to make the company self-sustaining.
And in December 2021, President Hakainde Hichilema issued a directive that a lasting solution for all challenges affecting the smooth operations of TAZARA should be found, to make sure that TAZARA becomes a viable business as soon as possible.
