Government releases over K5 million to three Councils

• K1.6 million was disbursed to Chienge Town Council, K1.4 million to Mazabuka Town Council.
• Mpulungu Town Council received in excess of K1.9 million.
• It is the Government’s aim to increase access to safe and clean drinking water.

Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has released K5, 057,939.83 to Chiengi, Mpulungu and Mazabuka Local Authorities towards construction, development and maintenance of sanitary facilities to support waste management efforts in the three districts.
Permanent Secretary for Administration Mambo Hamaundu revealed that of the total amount, K1, 604,487.50 was disbursed to Chiengi Town Council, K1, 454,479.38 to Mazabuka Town Council and K1, 998,972.95 to Mpulungu Town Council.
Mr. Hamaundu cited some of the intended projects as construction of three dumpsites and fencing of the sites which include Mununga, Puta and Lupiya in Chiengi district.
He said other projects include construction of VIP toilets and shelters in identified sites, procurement of waste management tools and provision of access to safe and clean drinking water.
Mr. Hamaundu stated that the Government is cognizant of challenges being encountered by communities especially in rural areas such as water supply and sanitation.
“It is the Government’s aim to increase access to safe and clean drinking water, access to proper sanitation and proper disposal of garbage in line with the aim to keep Zambia clean, Green and healthy, ” Mr. Hamaundu stated.
He implored the Local Authorities to utilize the funds for intended purpose to improve the livelihood of the local people.
“I would like to implore the local authorities to work very closely with their colleagues from Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation because there are water points, waterborne toilets and other amenities such as sewerage that need to be worked on,” he said.
