Government urged to educate fish farmers

• Fish farming is one of the many ways we can diversify in agriculture for food security in the country.

An agriculture expert says government should take keen interest in educating farmers and fishermen across the country ways to grow fish so that they do not suffer during a fish ban.
Dr. Frank Kayula tells Money FM News in an interview that fish farmers and fishermen should learn to cage fish in natural water bodies if they cannot manage to make their fish ponds in order to cushion the effects of the fish ban.
“We have some of the biggest cages in Africa where Yalelo is producing a lot of fish from the Kariba,” Dr. Kayula said.
“This is a very good alternative for those who cannot manage to make their own fish ponds and also allows them to add their fish as well.”
Dr. Kayula explains that people should be taught that fish is not only for capturing and must always breed if people are to venture in the fish business.
“Fish farming is one of the many ways we can diversify in agriculture for food security in the country hence the need for people to be taught how to grow fish so that they are not left hungry when there is a fish ban,” he said.
He adds that the extension of the fish ban should be a wakeup call for fishermen in the country who entirely depend on natural rivers and lakes to learn how to cultivate fish.
“The issue of fishermen having no income when there is a fish ban should not be the case,” Dr. Kayula said.
“They should be taught how to grow fish so that they continuously breed and do not suffer losses when there is a ban like at the moment.”
This follows a directive by the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries to extend the annual fish ban from end of February to 31st May, 2021.
