Zambia Youths Association in the Fight against Corruption (ZYAFAC) has urged government to ensure that all dormant mines across the country start operating.
The association has also commended the government for its effort to ensure that Munali Nickel Mine in Southern Province start operating saying it will create jobs for the local people.
Over 750 jobs will be created in Chikankata district following the re-opening of Munali Nickel Mine by President Edgar Lungu on Tuesday.
Of the 750 jobs, 400 will be direct ones while 350 will be indirect occupations.
ZYAFAC Executive Director Maurice Malambo has told Money FM News that it is commendable that President Lungu has asked the mine to employ local people and engage local contractors and suppliers to supply the needed raw materials to the mine.
Mr. Malambo also hopes that the new Roan Member of Parliament will work closely with the government in reopening the Baluba Shaft 4 in Luanshya.
Mr. Malambo said the onus is on Members of Parliament to ensure that they engage the government on reopening the dormant mines to start operating as a way of creating jobs for the local people.
He said it is pleasing that Mazabuka Member of Parliament Garry Nkombo worked tirelessly with government to ensure that the Munali Nickel Mine resumed operations which was under Care and Maintenance for about eight years.
The ZYAFAC Executive Director said it is important that more mining sites are opened in the country as this will see the government getting the much needed revenue from the mining industry.
