Tourism and Arts Permanent Secretary Dr. Howard Sikwela says there is need for tight surveillance in the Mosi Oa Tunya National Park to curb poaching.
Speaking during a meeting with United States Ambassador to Zambia Daniel Foote at Kwacha House, the Permanent Secretary says poachers have proved to be sticky as witnessed by the recent rhino-poaching incidence in the park that saw two animals killed, brutally removing of both horns from one of them.
Dr. Sikwela says there is also need for capacity building in the use of equipment such as unmanned aerial vehicles as poachers have become advanced in the operations.
And Mr. Foote commended the Permanent Secretary for showing leadership by getting to scene in time when the incidence happened.
He says this sent a right signal that senior officials in the ministry are concerned with operation especially tragic ones.
The diplomat says Zambia has enormous tourism but that the wildlife is very delicate and the US would support its protection efforts.
He says with good conservation efforts, the country has potential to attract a lot of tourists especially Americans.
