• It is a positive development for the construction sector.
• It will unlock the opportunity for government to have space to spend on infrastructure.
• This will have a trickle-down effect of providing opportunities to Zambian contractors in the construction sector.
Zambia Association of Citizen Contractors (ZACCO) the IMF US$1.3 billion package will unlock the opportunity for government to have space to spend on infrastructure development.
Association General Secretary Danny Simumba told Money FM News that this is a positive development for the construction sector because spending on infrastructure will have a trickle-down effect of providing opportunities to local contractors.
Mr. Simumba said the Association expects that government will now be able to have room to find some money to pay outstanding bills to the local contractors.
“For us in the construction sector we see it as a positive development as we hope to see that it will unlock the opportunity for government to have space to spend on infrastructure and this will have a trickle-down effect of providing opportunities to Zambian contractors in the construction sector. And also we anticipate that the government will now be able to have room to find some money to pay outstanding bills to the Zambian local contractors,” Mr. Simumba said.
He added that it is the Association’s hope that the development will translate into benefits to many Zambians.
“We foresee a bit of activity in the construction industry because government will now have room to maneuver and spend on infrastructure and other projects that will go to benefit the Zambians. We hopeful that this will translate into benefits to many Zambians,” he added.
Recently, the IMF approved Zambia’s request for a US$1.3 billion three year program to rearrange the country’s debt-stricken economy worsened by mismanagement and COVID-19 pandemic.
