Indian consortium to invest US$250 000 in Zambia’s manufacturing sector

A CONSORTIUM of Indian companies has announced plans to set up a melting plant in Zambia for non- ferrous metals to produce ingots and bars (intermediary products) for the global industries.
The consortium proposed initial investment of US$250 000 envisaging an export turn-over of USD 5 Million from the plant in Zambia per year.
“The manufacturing plant in Zambia will be fully operational by mid-year 2019,” OM Smelters and Rollers Private Limited Representative for Zambia Sanjay Agarwal said.
Mr. Agarwal said Zambia would earn NET foreign exchange and over 100 direct jobs would be created for the 24 hour shifts.
This came to light when Zambia’s High Commissioner to India Judith Kapijimpanga toured the manufacturing plant in Gwalior in the Indian State of Madhya Pradesh.
And Zambia’s High Commissioner to India Judith Kapijimpanga said recycling would help to clean the environment as desired by the Government of Zambia.
“The manufacturing plant in Zambia will also result in value addition to non ferrous metallic waste,” she said.
Mrs. Kapijimpanga said the consortium was bringing on board unique value and capabilities to Zambia as they could help in accelerating the development and growth of the manufacturing sector.
“I am happy to have witnessed the manufacturing operations in Gwalior in the Indian State of Madhya Pradesh which has the capacity to manufacture 120 000 tons of mild steel re- bars per year,” the High Commissioner said.
She said Zambia was looking forward to the recycling of non ferrous metals such as aluminium, lead, copper and brass.
“I wish to urge stakeholders in Zambia to move with speed in facilitating the investment so that it materialises by the first half of the year 2019,” Mrs. Kapijimpanga said.
