Informal workers wants introduction of ‘Mutual Fund’

The Association of Zambia Informal Economy Alliance has proposed for the creation of a Mutual Fund that will support workers in the informal sector.
Association President Lameck Kashiwa says the fund should have three components to look at pension, insurance and health and business.
Mr. Kashiwa says the association appreciates the fact that the NAPSA has extended pension services to the informal sector but that it should be adjusted to suit the informal sector workers.
“We appreciate the decision by NAPSA to extend their services to us but conditions remain as though they are for formal workers. The 15 years period for one in the informal sector to get his or her pension is too much and cannot work in the informal sector,” said Mr. Kashiwa.
He says it is for this reason that NAPSA should restructure its services offered to the informal workers so as to capture more workers.
