A Financial Expert says the Kwacha has this week appreciated by 5.4 percent against the Dollar.
Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, Shabdin Mweemba attributed the appreciation of the local currency to exports in the mining sector, as the sector is the major player in bringing foreign exchange into the country.
Mr Mweemba says going into next week, the Kwacha is expected to continue appreciating at the same trend or even further.
“From Monday until today the Kwacha has appreciated by 5.4 percent against the US Dollar, the appreciation is as a result of the exports in the mining sector seen to it that the sector is the major player in bringing foreign exchange into the Country,” Mr Mweemba said.
The Kwacha was this week expected to continue trading on a weak range of Eighteen Kwacha Five Ngwee due to subdued business activities.
According to Economist, Mambo Hamaundu, it was difficult to tell the general direction of the currency at a short term because the market had been fluid. He noted that due to reduced economic activities, there may be instances where demand for the Kwacha may be minimal resulting in a slight appreciation of the local currency
