LCC to empower youths with businesses

Lusaka Mayor Miles Sampa says the business of brick making and other building materials in residential areas should not be encouraged because it is a source of noise pollution.
The Lusaka Mayor also says he is looking at ways in which the council can empower youths in Lusaka.
Mr. Sampa says one of the ways Council could do that is by negotiating with companies producing Pavers to establish retail centers in townships and engage youths to be selling.
He says youths will benefit by being supplied with pavers at lower wholesale price and long credit terms and sell them at retail price thereby earning profit
Mayor Sampa said this when he toured Bosphorus Investment Ltd & Construction, one of the companies engaged in making pacers at commercial scale in Lusaka.
“We want youths to be empowered from the production of pavings by you setting up centres in compounds, engage youths, supply pavers at wholesale price and let them sell for you at retail price. At the end of the day you get your money and youths go away with something as well,” he explained.
Mr Sampa said the proposal would not only empower youths but also take services closer to the people who were buying substandard products being produced in backyards due to long distance to sources of quality products.
He observed that because of long distances to sources of quality pavers and other construction materials, some unscrupulous people had set up illegal brick making companies in residential areas contrary to the law.
The city father warned that his Council would not sit back and let the vice to continue thereby creating nuisances such as noise pollution.
“The business of brick making and other building materials in residential areas should not be encouraged because it is a source of noise pollution and other nuisances,” he complained.
Mr Sampa noted that by reorganising the business it could have a trickle down benefits to Council and youths in the city.
He committed that the Council would endeavour to find land where all those conducting this kind of business could settled.
