A combined team of Lusaka City Council Police and State Police has demolished 11 illegal makeshift stalls along Muzilikazi road near Medical Stores Limited.
In a statement issued to Money FM News by LCC Public Relations Manager George Sichimba says the stalls have been demolished because they were built on top of sewer and drainage lines which service Medical stores premises.
Mr Sichimba says owners of the affected stores also used to stock wood, grass and other forest products in the makeshift stalls erected close to the perimeter wall of Medical Stores.
He says the products were a potential source of fire thereby endangering the safety of medical stocks for the entire country.
“Medical Stores Limited has expanded the storage facilities by constructing a new state of the art warehouse which should be protected at all cost” He said.
Mr Sichimba says some of the materials used in the construction are sensitive to fire, hence the need to take precautions.
He says the operation will also be extended to containers that have illegally been placed close to the wall fence.
He the city council has asked ccontainers owners to move them by close of business today and should they fail Council will help them at a fee.
Mr Sichimba says the demolition exercise has been taken after traders failed to comply with enforcement noticed issued to them on several occasions.
He says the ccouncil and state police will remain at the site for the next three days to allow Medical Stores to fence off the problematic area.
He has since appealed to traders to cooperate with the team on the ground because the work they are doing is a noble one.
