The Zambia Youths Association in the fight against Corruption (ZYAFAC) has welcomed plans by the Lusaka City Council (LCC) to introduce an on-line payment system for their services.

ZYAFAC Executive Director Maurice Malambo has told Money FM in an interview that once introduced, the on-line payment system will promote transparency and accountability at the local authority.

”Electronic payment system will bring to an end issues of financial misappropriation and bribery, because officers from the authority will not have temptations that come with the handling of hard cash” He said.

He has also noted that research has shown in different advanced economies that the use of electronic payment system has less issues to deal with the misappropriation of public funds as well as corruption.

He laments that the payment for services over the counter puts at risk both the person seeking the service and the person providing the service citing high chances of the two parties getting involved in corrupt activities.

He has further advised other public institutions that have not introduced electronic payment system to do so in an effort to promote transparency and accountability in public institutions.

Lusaka Mayor Miles Sampa yesterday announced plans by the local authority to introduce an electronic payment system.

He said once introduced the move would ease challenges faced by LCC clients when making payments for their services.
