Ministry of Water Development, Sanitation and Environmental Protection says it is implementing the Lusaka Sanitation Programme at a total cost of US$300 million with the EU contributing 102.5 million Euros.
Speaking when the EU delegation paid a courtesy call on him, Minister of Water Development, Sanitation and Environmental Protection Raphael Nakachinda says this project will include the construction, rehabilitation and expansion of sanitation infrastructure within selected areas in Lusaka.
“The ministry, with support from the EU, is implementing water and sanitation programs and projects such as the Lusaka sanitation programs with the support of the Federal Republic of Germany through KFW, World Bank, African Development Bank,” he said.
“Once completed, this project will result in improved sewage treatment through the construction of treatment plants and 100 sanitation facilities in public institutions and 20, 000 households,” he added.
The Minister further added that that government places high premium on universal access to clean and safe water and adequate sanitation services due to the significant role the provision of safe and clean water and adequate sanitation plays in enhancing human development.
“This particularly focuses on the prevention of water borne diseases, poverty alleviation and the promotion of human dignity among others,” he said.
The minister has thanked the European Union (EU) for its continued support to the water sector in Zambia over the years.
