Northern Province Deputy Permanent Secretary has disclosed that the level of hunger and malnutrition among women and children in the region currently stands at about 42 percent.
Speaking to Money FM New, Lewis Mwape said Government in partnership with stakeholders has been implementing projects to support livelihoods in order to alleviate nutritional challenges facing community members in Chief Chabula of Lupososhi District.
Mr. Mwape also revealed that Government is providing free education and other social protection facilities to help reduce hunger and malnutrition.
He has since called for citizen’s participation in the social and economic processes at household level to alleviate poverty at grass root.
“The New Dawn Administration under the Leadership of His Excellency President of the Republic of Zambia Mr Hakainde Hichilema has created an enabling environment for the improvement of livelihoods at household level,” he said.
Mr. Mwape stated that encouraging households participating in local economic activities are some of the areas where Traditional Leaders must take an active role in supporting government efforts.
“The support system being provided to traditional leaders across the country is based on the fact that Traditional Leaders (Chiefs) are key actors in driving social and economic stimulation within their respective chiefdoms and villages,” he added.
Mr. Mwape added that Traditional Leadership would need to work with government in delivering development especially in rural areas and ensure that high dropout rates from schools among other challenges are addressed.
