Millers Association of Zambia (MAZ) has exported 90,000 metric tonnes of Mealie meal during the first quarter of 2022.
Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, Association President Andrew Chintala said the institution is hoping to export more mealie meal considering that it negotiated for an increase of monthly export allocation.
Mr. Chintala revealed that although the exports of the commodity are going well, the demand for mealie meal is relatively low.
He is optimistic that the Association will be able to export 100 percent of what has been allocated to them by Government as the first quarter comes to an end on 31st March 2022.
“The export is being managed and monitored on a weekly basis so that it does not disturb the domestic market,” he said
On 26 March 2021, government accepted the proposal by Millers Association of Zambia to allow millers to export 20 percent of their mealie meal made from their own maize therefore, millers and other stakeholders will be allowed to export an additional 150,000 metric tons of mealie meal from the period January to March 2022.
