Mines urged to enhance safety operations

The Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development has urged all mining firms to ensure that their employees undergo a mandatory comprehensive safety induction program.
The ministry says this includes both direct employees as well as indirect ones.
Mines Minister Richard Musukwa says his ministry, through the Mining Safety Department, is further urging all mines in the country to ensure that safety briefs are held at the beginning of every shift.
Mr. Musukwa says from October, 2018 to March 2019, about nine deaths have been recorded in the mining industry due to various reasons.
He said the accidents have occurred as a result of non-compliance to safety standards as well as human error.
He added that safety briefs spells out safety concerns in strategic areas and other safety measures.
He said the Mine Safety Department monitors at least one mine site per month depending of the availability of resources.
Mr. Musukwa said government places high premium on the safety of workers in the mining industry.
