NBA maintains ban on importation of GMOs was lifted

The National Biosafety Authority (NBA) says it is making strides to improve coordination with key public institutions in not allowing the importation of GMOs into the country without permit.
NBA Senior Biosafety Officer Research and Fields Mutibo Mushenywa also says the ban on the importation of GMOs was lifted but that only stakeholders with permits are allowed to import such products.
She says the authority will sign MoUs with institutions such as Ministry of Health, Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS), and Zambia Revenue Authority among other public institutions.
Ms Mushenywa was speaking when she featured on Money FM Business Radio’s Policy, Power and Money Programme that airs every Mondays and Thursdays at 9hrs.
She said the authority is not working in isolation but that it is engaging other key institutions in ensuring that its mandate if enhanced.
Ms Mushenywa indicated that the MoU with the Ministry of Health has reached an advanced stage.
And NBA Communications Officer Sandra Lombe says before the importation of these products, a risk assessment is done before they can be allowed on the market.
