National Biosafety Authority (NBA) has granted Gatbro a permit to import products which may contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
Authority Public Relations Manager Sandra Lombe told Money FM News that the permit which is valid for five years was granted after a risk assessment was conducted on the products that the company intends to bring into the country.
Ms Lombe said Gatbro will import two products that include Hinds Southern coating and Hinds spices.
“We have granted granted Gatbro a permit to import products which may contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs), the permit is valid for five years and was granted after conducting a risk assessment on the products that the company intends to import into the country,” Ms Lombe said.

She added that in the same vein, the Authority has renewed Zambian Brands permit to place on the market products which may contain GMOs and the permit is valid for six months to ensure compliance.
“In the same vein, the Authority has renewed Zambian Brands permit to place on the market products which may contain GMOs and the permit is valid for six months, in a quest to ensure compliance,” Ms Lombe said.
Ms Lombe has since called on companies whose import and placing on the market permits are about to expire to renew them in order for them to continue importing products that may contain GMOs.
