No Plastic Day’ cheers CESCo

The Citizens Environment and Social Concern (CESCo) has welcomed intentions by the Lusaka City Council to declare November 24th, 2018 as a No Plastic Day in the capital city.
The council will on this day ensure that no shop owners or chain stores will serve plastic bags to their clients.
Citizens Environment and Social Concern Executive Director Conwell Hakapya says this is a good move but should be backed by a legal framework.
“It is good move but what we need is a legal frame work because depending on people and businesses good will to do the right thing will not yield the much needed results. So people and businesses must be compelled by the Law not to distribute or sale single use plastic bags,” he submitted.
Mr. Hakapya says as the city pursues the clean, green and healthy environment, it is important that certain steps are taken to actualize this vision.
He said Zambia needs to accelerate efforts aimed at banning the use of plastic bags due to its impact on the environment.
