No worker at Indeni will lose employment – Govt

• It will be business as usual as employees will continue to work and get paid normally.
• Some employees will be absorbed into different Government companies.
• No time frame for the maintenance has been set as Government is still sourcing for money.

Ministry of Energy says no employee at Indeni Oil Refinery will lose their job during the period the firm will be under care and maintenance.

Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, Peter Kapala said it will be business as usual as employees will continue to work and get paid normally.

Mr. Kapala stated that some employees will be absorbed into different Government companies while others will remain at Indeni.

“Employees who would like to cease being employees of Indeni oil refinery are at liberty to do so during this period but they can be assured that they will be given the money they worked for, “he said.

He further revealed that no time frame for the maintenance has been set as Government is still sourcing for money to clear the debt it owes fuel suppliers before finding funds to start the maintenance works at Indeni.

Days ago, a Member of the Central Committee in the former ruling Party Patriotic Front (PF) Brian Mundubile challenged the government to come out in the open and explain the exact reasons, which were unknown to Zambians why it has taken the decision to place Indeni Oil Refinery under care and maintenance.

“Government needed to consider the plight of the workers first before embarking on this mammoth project and I know there was no credible engagement with workers’ representatives that I believe would have resulted in making a better decision”, he said.

Recently, Government announced that Indeni Oil Refinery Company in Ndola has been placed under care and maintenance as part of reforms aimed at promoting efficiency and stability in the petroleum subsector.
