NUSFAZ urges Government to promote Honey Production

• Honey Business is profitable.
• Government and Cooperating partners must join hands to promote honey production.
• Not much has been done by government to promote the production of honey in the country.

National Union for Small Scale Farmers in Zambia (NUSFAZ) has called on Government and cooperating partners to come on board and promote the Honey production in the country.
Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, Union Executive Director Ebony Loloji observed that government has not done much to promote Honey production, a move that has led to farmers shunning the industry due to lack of knowledge on bee keeping.
Mr Loloji said if fully promoted, Honey has potential to improve the livelihood of farmers in the country because the business is profitable.
“Honey production is one of the value chains we consider to be profitable and something that can boost the livelihood of farmers however, it is not something that farmers are taking up as an enterprise due to lack of knowledge about it,” Mr. Loloji said
He noted that currently only a few farmers are into bee keeping and are making money out of it.
“Government, Farmer Unions and other cooperating partners should join hands and explore markets where honey can be sold so that there is a readily available market for the product,” he noted.
Mr Loloji further urged Government to finance farmers for them to venture into the honey production industry.
Across Northwest Zambia stretch, thousands of square miles of Miombo Forest is full of nectar-producing trees in rich diversity, buzzing with bees and inhabited by people who for generations have been experts in beekeeping.
