A Law maker on the Copperbelt province says construction works at Old Mushili Market have advanced and about 300 displaced marketeers are expected to be moved into a roofed structure within a week.
Bwana Mkubwa Member of Parliament Dr. Jonas Chanda says the construction works have delayed taking over 3 years and has left traders in an unhygienic and unconducive trading environment.
He says in a statement that the construction works are being carried out by a Lusaka-based contractor called Triple V.
Dr Chanda says once the roofing is completed after one (1) week, about 300 displaced marketeers are expected to immediately be moved under the roofed market structure to conduct their trade as heavy rains have terribly disrupted their businesses.
He laments that delayed construction of the market has led to mass suffering of marketers who have been forced to trade makeshift temporary shacks on the ground in unhygienic conditions and unconducive trading environment.
According to a statement, the Lawmaker had previously called on the Ministry of Local Government to terminate the contract with Triple V based on POOR PERFORMANCE.
Meanwhile, Dr. Chanda has announced that a second market structure for retail clothing traders at Mushili market will be constructed soon by the same contractor.
