The Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) says overloading of busses ferrying School children in most parts of the country is a cause for great concern.
RTSA Head of Public Relations Fredrick Mubanga says many school buses and vans have continued operating without appropriate permits and violating traffic rules and regulations such as overloading of pupils, a situation that possess a great risk to the passengers on board.
Mr. Mubanga says a random check on some School buses and hired private buses on Monday, 28th January, 2019 found pupils literally squatting and overloaded, with drivers of the buses without proper documentation such as Driving Licences, which may cause problems to road safety and put the lives of the pupils at risk if left unchecked.
“As part of its broad and pro-active approach to road safety, the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA), has commenced the country wide random inspection of buses ferrying School children every day between 06:00 hours to 10:00 hours in the morning and from 15:00 hours to 18:00 hours in the evening a move aimed at checking overloading of passengers across the country,” he said.
He says the agency has taken the step to achieve compliance with all traffic rules and regulations as part of the proactive moves to prevent road accidents.
Mr. Mubanga cautions that those found overloading or not following the road traffic rules and regulations will be prosecuted in accordance with the provisions of the law.
“And in cases of a serious violation noticed, the vehicle shall be impounded. Pupils and members of the public are also implored to be pro-active and make use of the RTSA National Call Centre by reporting overloading, careless and dangerous drivers, said Mr. Mubanga.
