President Edgar Lungu over the weekend met with the Zambia Chambers of Mines and three mine unions to look at the new tax regime.
And the Head of State says Zambia’s tax system is fair and is done through wider consultations.
Presidential Spokesperson Amos Chanda has told Journalists in Lusaka that President Lungu has since sent a team of experts to First Quantum Minerals to understand the rationale behind the plans to cut off about 2, 500 jobs in the first quarter of 2019.
Mr. Chanda has also disclosed that the first meeting that the president had was with three mine work unions on Friday who presented their case to him over the new changes.
Mr. Chanda says on Saturday, the president met the Zambia Chambers of Mines who made a presentation to him and had asked them to present their case to the Ministries of Mines and Finance.
He says the Head of State was satisfied to learn from the mine worker unions that they in agreement with government that for any government to function smoothly, it needs to collect taxes.
“His excellency encouraged the workers to seek justification for any decision whatsoever that the mines may make involving job cuts,” he said.
The State House Spokesperson says the changes that were announced will remain law effective 1st, January 2019 while others will be implemented in April since they were approved by parliament.
