Reduction in misappropriation of funds commendable

A Business and financial analyst says the reduction in the misappropriation of funds in the latest report of the auditor general is commendable.

Speaking in an interview with money fm news Mambo Hamaundu says despite the reduction in the misappropriation of funds being minimal the achievement is still very commendable.

Mr Hamaundu says reduction in the misappropriation of government funds is an indication that the country is moving in a right direction in terms of doing what is supposed to be done.

‘’Am hoping that the trend will continue going down and does not reverse ‘’He said.

He adds that people charged with the responsibility of spending governments must ensure that the funds are spent the way the tax payers have approved it through the budget.

He hopes that the reduction in the misappropriation of public funds will further go down even in the next auditor general’s report.

Mr Hamaundu has since urged auditors in the country to continue up hold professionalism in the way they discharge their duties adding that the country can perform better in terms of how public funds are spent for the country.

The latest report of the Auditor General on the Accounts of the Republic for the financial year ended 31st December 2017 has revealed a reduction in the misapplication of Funds from K162 million in 2016 to K61 million in 2017.

The report however revealed evident irregularities in the various Ministries, Provinces and other Spending Agencies.

The highlighted some reductions in Unaccounted for Revenue from K3 million in 2016 to K873, 000 in 2017, unvourched Expenditure from K170 million in 2016 to K14 million in 2017 and Undelivered materials from K116 million to K1 million among others.
