Small Scale Farmers Development Agency (SAFADA), says it is targeting to train 600, 000 small scale farmers by 2030 at an estimated cost of K1.5 billion per year through a memorandum of understanding signed with University of South Bohemia based in Czech Republic.
Organization Executive Director Boyd Moobwe disclosed to Money FM News that the training which will be done online is aimed at empowering farmers with knowledge and skills in agriculture science and technology.
Mr. Moobwe observed that most small scale farmers in the country are not able to produce above 5 to 10 tons per hector and majority of them are seasonal farmers, hence they belong in the cycles of poverty due to lack of crop science knowledge and appropriate technology.
“SAFADA has negotiated and agreed with the University of South Bohemia to introduce on- line agriculture sciences and technology courses specifically to empower Zambian small scale farmers with knowledge and skills in agriculture.”
“SAFADA in Zambia and the University of South Bohemia based in Czech Republic signed a Memorandum of Understanding to introduce online and community based Agriculture and Technology short courses for small scale farmers in Zambia,” Mr. Moobwe announced.
He said the training is expected to start in October this year once funding is made available, adding that the farmers will be engaged into extensive and intensive practicals so as to prepare them to become agriculture specialists .
Mr. Moobwe appealed to Ministries of Agriculture and Finance to support such initiatives and recommend the motion for Donor support.
